Worshiping God at North Decatur United Methodist Church
When someone does something nice for us, we respond by offering an expression of our gratitude—a simple “thank you,” or maybe a note or some “in kind” expression. We might share the blessing by passing it on to another person. Worship is a lot like that except the Giver is God who has blessed us with Jesus Christ and so we spend our entire lives looking for ways to say “thank you.” Usually the worship setting is the primary place that we first learn to praise God and offer thanksgiving. Worship happens when the family of God meets to give something of ourselves back. We come to glorify God, to make our offering, to hear the scripture proclaimed, and to enjoy God.
Worship is the beginning for everything that happens at North Decatur UMC. We are a small congregation but we have a large heart for outreach and mission and all of our reaching out begins inside with worship. That is where we celebrate life and life together in the Spirit.
At 11:00 every Sunday morning, we offer our praises in a traditional worship style. Our chancel choir helps lead us in worship by sharing its considerable musical gifts with the congregation. We also have a bell choir and we welcome new members into a growing orchestra. The liturgy varies depending on the season of the church year and we follow the liturgical calendar and lectionary. Children learn the discipline as well as the fun in worship when they participate in a Children’s moment and then participate in Children’s Church in another room. There is childcare available for younger children.
During the church year, we observe special services of worship such as Ash Wednesday with the Imposition of Ashes. Holy Week Services include Palm/Passion Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter services. During the Lenten season, every Wednesday evening we will share a meal together and then participate in Lenten Vespers.
There is a place for everyone here. We invite you to find your place with us and with God at North Decatur UMC.
